Matt Brown Banner

Matt Brown - Roots Musician

Matt Brown performs American roots music with a a deft touch and a smile. He is an engaging performer who educates his audiences as he entertains with a varied program of traditional music. He plays sprightly square dance tunes, haunting banjo pieces, and sings a variety of songs from the blues to traditional ballads. He is an innovative fiddler, an intricate banjo player, a propulsive guitar player, and a moving singer. Many of his influences come from commercial recordings of the 1920's and 1930's. The rest come from field recordings made by collectors such as Alan Lomax, John Cohen and Mike Seeger, or from friendships with older musicians.

He is a solo performer, a musician with two dances ensembles (the FiddleKicks and Rhythm in Shoes), has made guest appearances with several touring acts (Tim O'Brien, Uncle Earl, The Wilders, Crooked Still), and is an active teacher. He offers lessons on fiddle, banjo, and guitar, and is happy to teach workshops wherever he goes. He has several albums to his credit ("Lone Prairie" and the instructional recording "Old-Time Fiddle Lesson, Vol. 1"), and is an active studio musician and producer. He is also a partner in the independent label 5-String Productions.
